Cuban Music
Course I – Music
Title: Cuban percussion (drums), minimum 5 students
Contents: To get acquainted with Cuban music through colloquiums and auditions, from its beginnings through to the latest tendencies. Demonstration of several instruments of Cuban percussion, and the way they are used. Playing of different Cuban rhythmic cells performed by the students while establishing different polyrhythms by clapping hands, corporal percussion, improvisation
Requisites: To pass an aptitude test.
Workshop I – Cuban percussion for amateurs
Length: 50 hrs, (3 hours per day face to face; 2 hours per day of independent study, in the afternoon) 2 weeks.
Workshop II – Cuban percussion for professionals
Length: 50 hrs, (3 hours per day face to face; 2 hours per day of independent study, in the afternoon) 2 weeks.
Course II - Music
Title: Panorama of the Cuban music, minimum 6 students
Contents: Introduction to the development of Cuban music on its two variants: classic and popular. Interaction of the popular and classical music through compositions of Cuban musicians from the XIX Century to the present day, genres of Cuban music,characterization and problems, Danza and Contradanza, Danzon, Son, Rumba, Salsa, Timba and Jazz; Main characteristics, exponents, instrumental formats, musical links between Cuba and Europe, materialization of its nexus in the Cuban music from its origins to nowadays; links connecting Cuba and USA, its origins, manifestations and development in Cuban music.
Features: The course will consist of workshops and conferences; all classes will employ audio-visual support.
Length: 40 hrs, divided in 10 days (4 hours per day) 2 weeks.
This program may include traveling to different cities, such as Havana, Sancti Spiritus, Cienfuegos, Camaguey, Santiago de Cuba and Baracoa and visiting places connected with Cuban music, incorporating expositions or concerts.
Course III - Music
Title: The Son in Cuba, minimum 6 students
Contents: What is Son? The generic sphere of Son. The Sonero style: main formats, creators and singers. Typology of Son: regions, instruments, rhythmic characteristics, its, sounds and twang. The Son and other breeds of Cuban music; interface between Son and Concert music.
Features: The course will consist of workshops and conferences; all classes will count incorporate audio-visual support
Length: 40 hrs, divided in 10 days (4 hrs per day) 2 weeks.
This program may contain several trips, including Havana, Camaguey, Santiago de Cuba and Baracoa, visiting expositions and interesting places linked with the Cuban music, as well as partaking in concerts.
